OpenAI’s New Direction
OpenAI has restructured and taken an exciting turn: A newly established foundation, the OpenAI Foundation, takes control of the company and manages shares valued at around 130 billion US dollars. Microsoft is also on board and has secured a stake of about 27 percent.
Investment Plans of the Foundation
The foundation has big plans and intends to invest a total of 25 billion US dollars in two key areas: medical research and the development of security mechanisms for AI systems. This aims not only to advance the promotion of open health data sets but also to create a robust and secure infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence.
Balancing Commercial and Non-Profit Interests
With this restructuring, OpenAI aims to bridge the gap between commercial interests and the original non-profit approach. The foundation remains the guardian of the mission to develop Artificial Intelligence responsibly in the interest of humanity. Despite the strong partnership with Microsoft, the non-profit work will continue to be secured and funded.
Addressing Internal Tensions
In recent years, there have been internal tensions at OpenAI, particularly regarding the balance between economic goals and research on safe AI. This realignment could be a step in the right direction to better address future challenges.
