Google’s New Real-Time Translation Technology
Google has developed an exciting new real-time translator technology that goes far beyond simple word-for-word translations. Currently, you can use this feature in Google Meet and on Pixel 10 devices. The special thing about it: You can speak in one language and be heard in another language in real-time. How does it work? At its core is AI-based speech translation, utilizing the same software integrated into Google’s AI framework, Gemini. And the best part: Your original voice remains intact.
The Technology Behind the Translation System
The translation system is based on so-called Transformer blocks. These highly advanced language models analyze and translate spoken language without transferring every small pause or uncertainty in the text one-to-one. Instead, the context is captured, and adjustments are made to enhance understandability.
International Collaboration for Improvement
An international team from several cities, including Berlin, Stockholm, and New York, is continuously working on improving this technology. The goal is to increase translation quality and minimize delays. Currently, the delay in the real-time process is about two seconds. However, with further developments, this time could be reduced even further, which would be particularly beneficial for companies looking to communicate across language barriers.
Target Audience and Security Measures
The technology is primarily aimed at internationally operating companies and users who want to benefit from this function in real-time calls. Google also keeps security aspects in mind: strict guidelines are in place to prevent misuse, such as impersonating false identities.
